Treatment for nursemaid elbow in toddlers

The toddler’s elbow joint is very soft. If it is pulled, it will be subluxed or dislocated from a normal structure. It’s called nursemaid elbow or pulled elbow.

Treatment

Reduction is the best treatment for nursemaid elbow.

Many toddlers suffer from a condition known as nursemaid elbow, also called medial epicondylitis. This is the result of repetitive use of one hand during activities such as carrying or playing with a toy. The most effective treatments for this condition are physical therapy and wearing a brace. These treatments should not only be given to the child, but also to the parent who was using their hands inappropriately when carrying or playing with their child.

Nursemaid elbow, also known as “toddler’s elbow,” is a common overuse injury in toddlers. It occurs when the ulnar nerve in the arm becomes compressed from overexertion from repetitive movements, such as carrying a heavy backpack or toy or lifting a toddler. This condition often goes untreated and can lead to long-term damage if it is not diagnosed early.

Nursemaid elbow is the injury most frequently seen in toddlers. Recent studies show that it results from fast or prolonged external rotation of the shoulder joint. It is common for toddlers to demonstrate this behavior when trying to push an object away with their arm, which may often occur with children who are learning to walk. Symptoms include pain over the back of the child’s elbow, forearm, and wrist with tenderness over the bicipital groove on the top of the child’s arm.
